The Commissioner for Youth Development, Amb. Ndanusa Usman Shehu, has called on young girls to speak up against all forms of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and never allow fear or shame to silence their voices.
He made this passionate appeal during the 2025 International Day of the Girl Child Celebration held at Government Secondary School, Oke-Aluko, yesterday organized by the Impact Driven Initiative for Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Association of Lady Pharmacists, Kwara State Chapter, and the Association of Professional Counselors of Nigeria, Kwara State Chapter.
In his remarks, he described GBV as “a silent menace eating deep into the fabric of our society,” stressing that many young girls suffer in silence due to fear, stigma, and lack of support. He, however, encouraged them to summon courage and seek help whenever they face abuse or harassment.
“Speak up, don’t keep it to yourself,” Amb. Ndanusa urged. “Silence protects the abuser, not the victim. There are people and systems in place to listen, support, and protect you. The Ministry of Women Affairs is fully responsible for handling such cases, and our youths must know they are never alone.”
He further commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for his continuous commitment to inclusiveness, gender equity, and youth empowerment. He noted that the Governor’s administration has remained a trailblazer in promoting policies that give both boys and girls equal opportunities to thrive.
“The present administration has shown through actions that the girl child matters,” the Commissioner stated. “From the appointment of women into key leadership positions to programmes that promote education, health, and skills for girls, His Excellency has continued to build a Kwara where every girl can dream and achieve.”
The event featured interactive sessions, counseling talks, and presentations that highlighted the importance of educating and empowering the girl child in today’s society.
In attendance were representatives from the Ministry of Women Affairs, students from various secondary schools across Ilorin metropolis, and several youth development advocates who collectively echoed the message of empowerment, protection, and equal opportunity for all girls.
The 2025 International Day of the Girl Child celebration in Kwara State thus served as a powerful reminder that when girls are safe, educated, and confident, they become strong pillars of the community and catalysts for sustainable development.
