The Kwara State Government remains committed to the protection of lives and properties of citizens, including the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the State.
This assurance was given by the State Commissioner for Youth Development, Amb. Ndanusa Usman Shehu, during a live radio programme tagged “Ijoba Mekunu” held on today in Ilorin.
Amb. Ndanusa, while speaking on the relocation of corps members from the NYSC orientation camp in Yikpata to the Kwara State Polytechnic, explained that the decision was aimed at facilitating the ongoing construction of the perimeter fence at the Yikpata camp. He emphasized that the temporary shift was necessary to ensure the safety and security of all corps members.
The Commissioner also advised Nigerian graduates to complement their academic qualifications with skills acquisition. According to him, practical skills offer young people an edge in today’s competitive world, helping them to stand on their own and build sustainable livelihoods.
“There is no shortcut to greatness,” citing his own journey from a humble background to his current position. He stressed that education remains a powerful tool for youth empowerment and can help shape personal businesses in a more refined and professional manner.
On the issue of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), the Commissioner called on the public to remain vigilant and proactive. “When you see something, say something,” he urged, while highlighting the State government’s firm stance against all forms of violence, especially those targeted at women and girls.
He added that the administration of Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is working tirelessly to combat SGBV in partnership with relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Women Affairs and youth-focused organizations such as Africa Rise Right Initiative. These collaborations aim to ensure that perpetrators of sexual assault are duly prosecuted and justice is served.
Tbe Commissioner concluded by encouraging youths to remain focused, committed to self-development, and play active roles in building a safer and more productive society.
